Step-by-Step Tube Feeding Guidance

Your healthcare team will ensure you are well trained in hospital on tube feeding instructions for yourself or your loved one. Before you begin

Make sure you have everything you need before starting to set up your feed:

  • feeding pack or formula
  • pump
  • Pump stand (optional)
  • Regimen
  • feeding set and ENfit adapter (if required)
  • sterile or cooled boiled water and ENfit syringe for flushing

It’s important that everything is kept as clean as possible. Before starting a pump feed:

  1. Wash hands and dry with a clean towel
  2. Clean all work surfaces
  3. Collect the feed pack and the feeding set plus ENfit syringe
  4. Wash hands and dry with a clean towel
  5. Prepare on a clean surface

Before and after you use your tube for feeding or to give medications, be sure to flush the tube with either sterile or cooled boiled water with an ENfit syringe. Your dietitian should tell you how much water you need to flush your tube adequately.

Pump feeding

The equipment needed for a pump feed includes:

  1. Feed pack
  2. Feeding set
  3. ENfit adapter (if required)
  4. ENfit syringe
  5. Pump
